New York-based soca-dancehall act Cali Gray is turning heads and waistlines across the region with her single “D Goods”.
Cali Gray, real name Calika Grayson, literally signs, seals and delivers the goods with an impressive bouncy flow atop the WMG Labs-produced old-school 90’s-style Happy Wine Riddim. The song has been lighting up radio station switch boards from Jamaica to Trinidad and the top regional DJ’s have already labeled the track a forerunner for the 2018 summer party anthem.
“Everywhere we drop it people are just loving the track and saying ‘Cali this is it here’. It’s so rewarding as an artiste to see people connect with the music you create and for that alone I am already so thankful and appreciative,” a sincere Cali Gray said of the immediate overwhelming success of the track.
The Trinidad-born singer received a warm welcome home when she launched the self-penned single on local radio last weekend with numerous playbacks from DJ’s and vociferous requests from listeners. Local producer Shawn “Mista Spine” Stewart co-wrote the Emmerson “Wiz” George-produced track with Cali Gray.
We understand that our strength is not just about sex but also having a brain power.
“We sent the track ahead and the reception in T&T has already been amazing. I can’t wait to get my feet on the ground and start performing and sharing our vibe, because everything we do takes a team effort,” Gray said.
The outgoing performer said the song is all about empowering female sexuality. She says women should never be ashamed of their bodies or be timid in owning and declaring their sexual power.
“We are saying we are confident and sexy no matter what shape we come in. And we understand that our strength is not just about sex but also having a brain power. That’s why in the song I say ‘ME have it good on top and it good underneath,” she said.
Cali Gray, part of the soca defender team, is the daughter of popular DJ Kabuki (Kevin Grayson) and dancer Ann Marie George. She was the only soca act at the Rap & Hip Hop Coast 2 Coast showcase in Brooklyn last year.
Cali Gray is also the first Caribbean act to be booked for the popular Festival at Sea annual cruise which sails from Miami, USA to Nassau, Bahamas with stops in Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios in Jamaica and Labadee in Haiti. She is carded to share top billing on board the ship with US R&B star Anthony Hamilton and En Vogue, among others.
